Our relationship journey...

As we navigate through life many relationships are formed, starting with the one we have with our caregivers. As we grow through childhood and mature into adulthood, we gradually become independent in choosing our relationships, as our life travels through many developmental stages. The most important relationship that develops through this time is the relationship we have with ourselves. All other relationships are in some way determined by the relationship we have with ourselves.

I just love the quote by Louise Hay that I have included in the introduction of Part One of my book. It goes like this:

Be committed to the relationship you have with yourself.

We get so committed to other relationships,

But sort of toss ourselves away.

We get around to ourselves only now and then.

So, really care for who you are.

Be committed to loving yourself.

Take care of your heart and soul.

This is so wise as I have seen this play out in so many people's lives and this includes my own life. When we don't truly value ourselves, we become vulnerable to being mistreated by others, which can have most unfavourable consequences.

I believe this is such an important topic for many, especially for many women who have given up huge parts of themselves in order to keep relationships and families together. Many of us don't learn this until later in life, so my hope is that younger adults take notice and learn how to take care of their heart and soul earlier in life. I also hope my messages reach those who have encountered difficult times and helps them recover.

What I've learned is that we have to start with ourselves. We see and hear many memes encouraging us to love ourselves in many different forms but I don't think we give a lot of consideration to what that really means. This is explained in more detail in my book, as I think we need to get a whole lot better at understanding this so we can live happier and more fulfilling lives.
