Following your Passion

I was inspired to talk today about passion — those special desires we hold in our heart of hearts. In my many years of private practice I don’t think there was anyone I saw that I didn’t ask them the question, “What is your passion?” Some would look at me blankly as if to say, What on earth are you talking about? While others would be able to readily tell me the very thing or things that make their spirit come alive. Either way, the intention is to bring the question into focus.
Chapter 7 in my book — You and Your Relationship Journey — titled “Embracing Your Uniqueness” addresses the idea that each and every one of us is unique and we all have special gifts. I believe this is such a valuable concept which we often ignore, yet would benefit by staying mindful of as it leads us to that question, What makes me different from everyone else? We all have some inner awareness of our uniqueness, though often we don’t allow ourselves to honour it.
So why does this happen you may ask? Well I’m sure there’s not just one answer to this but what I do know is that our limiting beliefs in ourselves present obstacles that can become debilitating and cause us to give up on pursuing our dreams. All it takes is for that self-doubt to creep in once we have a positive thought about how we may embrace our passion and we’re back to what seems safe and familiar and we abandon that which our hearts desire.
Have you ever had an idea that you wanted to do something really wonderful and as opportunities arose, you found a reason why you can’t do that thing you would love to do? Not the right time. Not capable. Others do it better. Someone in your life won’t like it. Don’t deserve it. Wasting money. Wasting time. How many times have we heard similar stories? Yet pursuing this could have such a positive impact, either bringing a welcomed change in your life direction or adding to it in some way.
Your passion is immeasurable and bestowed as a gift from your life force. It is not something that requires permission from anyone outside of yourself. It’s a part of who you are at the very core of your being and deserves to be honoured. There’s a wise old adage that says, “Don’t die with the music still in you!” I often ponder the power of this statement. It’s symbolic meaning assumes that we all have intrinsic talents that need to be expressed. It also appears to have a creative element that suggests we all possess some form of creativity, including you! Too often this gets squashed by self doubt.
The good news is that it doesn’t need to be that way! Neither does it mean you have to be doing something totally amazing by the world’s standards. All it really takes is to ask yourself the question about what makes your heart sing. What makes you feel deeply happy and what comes up when you ask yourself - What is my passion? Even if you don’t know the answer yet, keep asking yourself the question until the answer becomes apparent.
Once you become aware of what you’re passionate about, ask yourself what’s getting in the way. What are the obstacles that are stopping you from pursuing your passion? Have you been making excuses due to fear of pursuing it? Is there something in your life that has a negative impact and you need to replace? Do you have a tendency to sabotage the things that may bring joy into your life? What may happen if you shed the light on this? Give it some space and some light. Be present with it and allow yourself to be inspired enough to take action!
Pursuing our happiness through honouring our passion can bring a whole new dimension to our lives. Sometimes we can get caught up with things that don’t matter when we could be putting our energy into something more positive like following our passion. Believe in your own worth and follow your dreams!
Happy dreaming lovelies and choose happiness! Embrace your passion!
