Isn’t this what so many people either say or at least think as times? I mean, does it really do anything at all? Why bother… I’m too busy…. don’t have time for such things. All are statements that reflect underlying beliefs that meditation is a waste of time. TRUE? or FALSE?
ANSWER: FALSE
How do I know? For those reading this that are accustomed to doing regular meditation, you will need absolutely no explanation. You will be aware that this is an essential life skill and practice. It is also only really understood once mastered.
However, if you need some encouragement, then read on and hopefully you will gain some insights to help you understand the value of this very ancient and yet, modern practice. I trust you will seek to understand more through experience. Some of my finest inspirational moments have emerged following a deep and relaxing meditation session. It is such a wonderful experience!
Meditation has the miraculous quality of quietening the mind. If you are prone to anxiety and overthinking, you will no doubt be curious as to why I referred to meditation as miraculous! The answer is, there is very little else that does quite the same to get the desired effect. Meditation takes our attention and focus onto our breathing and then onto awareness of our body, which has the ability to instil a sense of calm within a very short time frame. This is why taking time to meditate, even if only for a few minutes, will help us through our day.
Meditation is great at any time, but I believe morning meditation has the ability to set us up for the day. If we wake up and start rushing about trying to get everything done before starting our day, we may not have the best start. When we start off with a sense of calm, we’re more likely to manage the events of the day well. We’ll certainly feel better for it. If you like to pray, make sure you incorporate being still and listening.
Did you know that when our mind is calm, we have better access to our logical brain? This is a fact and a good reason for engaging in regular self-calming. Have you noticed when you’re overwhelmed, either because you’ve got too much work on, you’re juggling too many different things or life events have been dragging you down that at times you just can’t think straight? Don’t be alarmed… You are not alone! This happens to us all at some time or another.
Being busy can sometime get worse throughout your day and getting some calm into your day is not that difficult. I have often suggested to people who are struggling in their busy work place, to go somewhere to get away for a few minutes, either outside, in a quiet room or even off to the rest rooms. If you are able to go where you can take some deep breaths to ground yourself and do a short meditation to focus on your breathing and body, you are sure to notice a difference and will be able to recalibrate within a few minutes.
With regular practice, mediation becomes more of a natural process which you can access more readily and bring into different aspects of your day. Staying calm allows us to tap into our creative mind and deal with each situation as it comes, rather than reacting and feeling the need to pre-empt the answers to the unknown problems as they emerge. With regular practice, we can learn to live our lives more mindfully, less reactively and in a state of calmness.
If you’ve tried before and given up, then you may need to persevere to gain mastery over this as meditation takes practice. If you have kids waking you up early, you may like to teach them to mediate too so they can get an earlier start in life on this one.
